The Creative Eye

Some say that a person "has the eye" for taking great photos. It's true that some have a natural talent for creating interesting and impactful images, but composition is a skill that can be learned and improved upon. We will cover time-tested principles of design and creativity, but will go well beyond "the rule of thirds". These lessons can apply to most forms of photography, as well as many other visual art forms. This presentation is designed for all levels of photographers and artists with any type of camera.

AOPC - August meeting- Jp Stones, Photographer

Virtual ONLY (Zoom) Arkansas Outdoor Photographer's Club meeting:

August 18 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

You must be a paid member of the AOPC to attend.

Great storytelling can help your audience connect emotionally with your images. But understanding how to weave a narrative into your photography can be confusing. How can one photo tell a whole story, with a beginning, middle, and end?

JP has spent the last 5 years photographing the same group of Mexica, or Aztec, dancers. In that time he learned how connected the Mexica are to their mythology. To stories passed down across generations. That’s when he decided that, as these stories were so vital to Mexica culture, they needed to play a bigger role in his portraits.

This is a talk is about what happened next. About how a desire to tell stories visually, ended up changing his entire creative process, and the way people react to his photos. Using examples from his cultural photography work in Mexico, JP Stones explores different ways to improve that emotional connection. Including how myths and character archetypes can be harnessed for better storytelling.

Working with narratives won’t just change the way people engage with your photos, it will fundamentally change the way you create them. Because that narrative can also be used to guide decisions on posing, composition, lighting, and color. Focusing your creative decisions and ensuring you create cohesive work.

JP has presented for professional organizations and camera clubs across the US, Mexico, and the UK. His work has been featured on the cover of multiple publications, including Good Light Magazine. He’s been teaching his Photo Workshops for close to 10 years.

TOPICS DISCUSSED IN JP’S TALK

  • How much of a story can one photo really tell?
  • How being more intentional can changed your approach to photography.
  • How photography can be about making an emotional connection as well as creating beautiful work.
  • How thinking in stories can help guide your entire creative decision-making process.

AOPC - September- TEaching meeting

September 15 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Have you ever wondered what a setting on your camera is or how to use it? With all the advancements in features, it can often leave people with many questions.

Although it is not essential to know every setting on your camera, knowing what features can help while in the field and how to access them quickly is helpful. In September’s meeting, Alex Kent and Bobby Burton will attempt to answer those questions. We encourage attendees to bring their cameras so that we can help give a hands on explanation. So please join us as we cater toward the learning side of things, which is the root of AOPC.

Anyone interested in outdoor photography is welcome to come to a meeting and then decide if they'd like to officially join.
